Zareen, Huang, Yang, Borgohain cap Asian dominance in World Championships

Nikhat Zareen and Huang Hsiao Wen seized their second crown while Yang Liu and Lovlina Borgohain took their maiden title in the IBA Women’s World Championships 2023 on Sunday in New Delhi, India.

After winning the flyweight trophy last year, host country’s best bet Zareen fended off the hard-fighting Nguyen Thi Tam of Vietnam for a unanimous decision in the light flyweight (50kg) division.

Chinese Taipei’s Huang reclaimed the bantamweight (54kg) title she won in 2019 after utilizing her height and reach advantage against Colombia’s Yeni Marcela Arias to score a 5-0 romp.

Yang handed China its third gold medal in the tournament as the 2019 silver medalist outclassed Thailand’s Janjaem Suwannapheng, 5-0, in the welterweight (66kg) final.

Reigning ASBC Asian elite champion Lovlina Borgohain delivered the fourth title for India with a split decision win over Australia’s Caitlin Parker in the middleweight (75kg) class.

Meanwhile, former world champ Lazzat Kungeibayeva of Kazakhstan settled for silver after suffering a 1-4 defeat to Khadija Mardi of Morocco in heavyweight (+81kg).

Overall, eight Asians were crowned champions across the 12 weight categories following the victories of India’s Nitu Ghanghas and Saweety Boora, and China’s Wu Yu and Yang Chengyu in the first phase of the finals on Saturday.

India topped the medal standings with four golds followed by China with three golds, one silver and three bronzes.

Chinese Taipei netted a gold, Kazakhstan copped two silvers and four bronzes while Mongolia and Thailand both nabbed a silver and a bronze.

Vietnam got a silver even as Japan, South Korea and Uzbekistan had one bronze apiece.
