New highlight for Cambodia’s boxing at the ASBC Asian U22 Boxing Championships

The Cambodians arrived to a new milestone in their boxing life, Abdulla Rajapov is their first ever finalist in an ASBC Championships. Rajapov met for the title of the heavyweight (92kg) Uzbekistan’s ASBC Asian Youth Champion Nusratbek Tokhirov and finally claimed a historic silver medal for Cambodia.

Cambodia achieved two silvers and one bronze medal in the history of the boxing events of the Asian Games between 1962 and 1970 but the country has never had any finalists in the ASBC Boxing Championships.

The Southeast Asian Games is one of the most important event for the Cambodians and the regions’ best boxers which holds every two years. You Chin Hong claimed Cambodia’s first gold medal in the boxing events of the Southeast Asian Games in 1961. Sun Soth and Olympian Khieu Son won their next and last gold medals in the 1965 edition.

The the next edition of the Southeast Asian Games will be held for the very first time in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on May 2023 and their management invested a lot of sources to get top results in the upcoming multisport event.

ASBC President Mr. Pichai Chunhavajira supported the Cambodians with his very best in the recent months which is part of the strategic development for the smaller countries. Mr. Sophoan Buy is one of the ASBC Board of Directors and the key manager in then Cambodian Boxing Federation who arranged all of the important projects in the recent six years.

The Cambodian Boxing Federation hired a Kazakh coach, Mr. Berikbol Kassymkhanov nearly one year ago and all of their previous boxers and veterans returned to the national team including the 2015 SEA Games silver medallist, Ratha Ven. The Cambodians competed in Jordan, in Kazakhstan and in Thailand in the recent months but the ASBC Asian U22 Boxing Championships is their biggest highlight.

Abdulla Rajapov is a 20-year-old talent who represented his new nation already at the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships in Amman. The Cambodian heavyweight (92kg) boxer eliminated Kyrgyzstan’s Bakyt Toktosun Uulu in the semi-finals of the U22 event in Bangkok. Rajapov became the first ever Cambodian boxer who advanced to a final of the ASBC Asian Boxing Championships. He was competitive to Uzbekistan’s Nusratbek Tokhirov in the final but his Central Asian opponent earned the title in Bangkok.
