Erkinboyev, other Asian winners zoom to Aitenov finals
Reigning Asian youth champion Fazliddin Erkinboyev of Uzbekistan and fellow Asian medalists overcame their respective assignments in the semifinals of the 22nd Aitenov Brothers Youth Tournament in Kostanay, Kazakhstan over the weekend.
The 17-year-old Erkinboyev, who won the welterweight (67kg) title in the ASBC Asian Youth & Junior Boxing Championships 2022 held in Amman, Jordan last March,, climbed to light middleweight (71kg) this time but still managed to enter the gold medal match after taking a 3-2 win over Kazakhstan’s Sagyndyk Bazar.
Asian silver winner Daulet Tulemisov of Kazakhstan earned a bye in the quarterfinals of the middleweight (75kg) division before surviving a nip-and-tuck semifinal contest against Uzbekistan’s Turarbek Khabibullayev for a 3-2 split decision.
Uzbekistan’s Javokhir Ummataliyev, another silver finisher in Amman, stopped Tajikistan’s Anushervon Aknazarov right in the opening round and marched easily to the welterweight (67kg) final.
Kazakhstan’s Bakhtiyar Anarbayev sustained his impressive performance despite moving up from featherweight (57kg) to lightweight (60kg) as the Asian bronze medalist manhandled Uzbekistan’s Zabardast Hayotov, 5-0, in the last four.
A total of 119 youth boxers from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Poland joined the Aitenov Brothers tilt sanctioned by the Kazakhstan Boxing Federation. The tournament is also serving as a preparatory event for the IBA Youth Men’s & Women’s World Boxing Championships 2022 slated to take place on November 6 to 20 in Alicante, Spain.
