Asian medalists reign in Iran’s youth national event

Three Asian Boxing Confederation (ASBC) Asian Youth Championships podium finishers came out victorious in the Iranian Youth National Championships 2022 that concluded recently in the city of Mashhad.

Amman 2022 bronze winner and the new face of the national youth team Nima Bayati of Tehran first dispatched Mehrdad Hasani Kouchak, 4-1, in the semifinals then demolished Mostafa Raghani Moghadam, 5-0, in bantamweight (54kg) gold medal bout.

West Azerbaijan’s Dana Abolfazi, another bronze medalist in Amman, stepped down to middleweight (75kg) but still took care of business as he knocked out Seyed Ali Hasheminasab in the semis before beating Mirreza Mostafavi, 4-1, in the final.

Khorramabad’s Mohammad Parsi, who won a bronze in the 2019 Asian Junior tilt, eliminated Ali Bakhtiari Nejad in the semis and proceeded to score a 4-1 victory over Amir Reza Haghani in the final for the light welterweight (63.5kg) title.

Meanwhile, Hamidreza Saneie pulled off the biggest upset of the tournament after stunning Dubai 2021 silver finisher Ali Asghar Afshari in the featherweight (57kg) finale.

Morteza Rigi (minimum-48kg), Sadra Safari (fly-51kg), Amir Hossein Pishro (light-60kg), Mohammadsina Mortazavi (welter-67kg), Seyed Amir Hossein Ahmadpour (light middle-71kg), Hossein Kordiou (light heavy-80kg), Pouria Esmaeili Godarzi (cruiser-86kg), Ariyan Saedpanah (heavy-92kg) and Reza Khalizadeh (super heavy-+92kg) also emerged triumphant in the youth national tourney.

A total of 196 boxers born in 2004 and 2005 battled it out for the gold medals and the chance to represent Iran in the International Boxing Association (IBA) Youth Men’s & Women’s World Championships slated on November 5-20 in Alicante, Spain.
