Thailand snags four golds, returns to top of SEA Games boxing
Thailand seized four gold medals on top of two silvers and three bronzes to reclaim the overall title in the 31st Southeast Asian Games boxing competition held at the Bac Ninh Gymnasium in Vietnam.
Somchay Wongsuwan started the Thais’ gold haul as the AIBA World Championships 2021 quarterfinalist demolished Farrand Papendang of Indonesia, 5-0, in the men’s lightweight (63kg) division.
Bunjong Sinsiri followed it up with a 5-0 pummeling of Sarohatua Lumbantobing in men’s welterweight (69kg) while Jakkapong Yomkhot came through with a first-round RSC victory against Ong Pherak of Cambodia in heavyweight (91kg).
Two-time Women’s World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Chuthamat Raksat trounced Trinh Thi Diem Kieu off Vietnam, 5-0, in light flyweight (48kg) to help Thailand regain the overall championship after the Philippines won it almost three years ago in Manila.
Meanwhile, host Vietnam finished second in the medal standings with three golds courtesy of its female boxers along with two silvers and two bronzes.
ASBC Asian champion and Tokyo Olympics campaigner Nguyen Thi Tam dominated fellow Olympics veteran Irish Magno of the Philippines, 5-0, in women’s flyweight (51kg) even as Vuong Thi Vy edged out Nilawan Techasuep of Thailand, 3-2, in featherweight (57kg) and Tran Thi Linh crushed Huswatun Hasanah of Indonesia, 5-0, in lightweight (60kg).
The Philippines completed the podium after tallying a 3-1-5 gold-silver-bronze haul, with Tokyo Olympics bronze winner Eumir Marcial leading the charge by stopping Delio Anzaqeci Mouzinho of Timor Leste in the opening round to defend his middleweight (75kg) title.
Rogen Ladon bagged his second straight gold with a 4-1 win over hometown bet Tran Van Thao in men’s flyweight (52kg) and Ian Clark Bautista drubbed Naing Latt of Myanmar, 5-0, in bantamweight (57kg) for his second SEAG gold in seven years.
Indonesia got one gold, thanks to Maikhel Roberrd Muskita ruling the men’s light heavyweight (81kg), together with three silvers and one bronze while Cambodia had one silver and three bronzes, Myanmar one silver and two bronzes, and Timor Leste one silver and one bronze.
