14 Asian bets secure medal in Women’s World Championships

Fourteen of the 28 Asian quarterfinalists assured themselves of at least a bronze medal in the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Istanbul, Turkey on Monday.

Alua Balkybekova of Kazakhstan seized the first medal for Asia in this year’s edition after taking a slim 3-2 win against India’s two-time youth world champion Nitu Ganghas in the minimumweight (48kg) class.

Fellow Kazakhstani veteran Zhaina Shekerbekova, a silver medalist last 2018, subdued Olena Savchuk of Italy, 4-0, while Jutamas Jitpong of Thailand got her revenge against Tursunoy Rakhimova of Uzbekistan via 3-2 split decision in the flyweight (52kg) division.

India’s Parveen Hooda shocked Tajikistan’s three-time ASBC Asian bronze winner Shoira Zulkaynarova, 5-0, in the light welterweight (63kg) even as another Indian bet in Manisha Moun mauled Monkhoryn Namuun of Mongolia, 4-1, in the featherweight (57kg).

Former world champion Lin Yu-ting of Chinese Taipei tallied her fourth win in Istanbul at the expense of Brazil’s Jucielen Romeu, 5-0, in the featherweight while Aziza Yokubova of Uzbekistan stunned Tokyo Olympics veteran Giordana Sorrentino of Italy, 4-1, in the light flyweight (50kg).

“This was my best contest in this championship, and I feel I am getting better and better in each bout. I could use my best game strategy and I felt comfortable today but I know I will have a hard job in the semifinals,” said Lin, who is also a two-time ASBC Asian titlist.

Overall, Kazakhstan secured at least five medals, both India and Thailand three, Uzbekistan two and Chinese Taipei one.
