Om Khem, Nov Sokty, Sao Rangsey and Vy Sophors continued their winning series in the Cambodian National Championships
The new edition of the Cambodian National Championships was held for their elite women and men boxers in the capital city of the country in Phnom Penh. The national event was their selection competition for the upcoming international championships including the SEA Games. Om Khem, Nov Sokty, strong Sao Rangsey and Vy Sophors are young hopes but claimed their second or third elite national titles.
The developing boxing nation has been preparing with full speed to the 2022 Southeast Asian Games which will be held in Hanoi, Vietnam next May. Following the Hanoi edition, the 32nd Southeast Asian Games will be held at the very first time in Cambodia on May 5-16 in 2023. The Cambodians have got long term projects to reach the best possible results in the 2023 SEA Games on home soil.
The squad from the Ministry of Economy and Finance earned five gold medals in the Cambodian National Championships and won the team standings. Teams from the Kuchsa Sar Mean Rith Club, Kandal Province, Ratanak Kiri Province, Navy Club and Ministry of National Defense won gold medals in the National Championships. Altogether 18 teams earned at least one medal in the new national event which took place in Phnom Penh.
The women boxers could compete in one category, at the featherweight (57kg) in Phnom Penh. Vy Sreyros was silver medallist in the 2020 Cambodian National Championships which she changed into gold in the new edition. The young girl defeated Meoun Sreyka in the final of the national event and she is now near to compete in the upcoming SEA Games.
Kandal Province’s Om Khem was gold medallist in the last 2020 edition of the National Championships and he repeated that performance, earning his next title against Mory Prin at the minimumweight (48kg). Ratanak Kiri Province’s Nov Sokty eliminated one of the favourites Hang Ramorn already in the semi-finals and he continued the winning path against Chun Roeun Saroth of Kangpul Touch 90 Boxing Club.
Navy’s Sao Rangsey is only 21 but he has experiences from several competitions therefore he was too smart for last year’s silver medallist Dos Rothana in his new category at the bantamweight (54kg). Kuchsa Sar Mean Rith Club’s Ouch Thearith was titleholder in the National Championships and he had the strong boxing skills to beat Leap Rotha in the final of the men’s featherweight (57kg).
Ouch Davit claimed only silver medal in the last edition which he changed into gold in the new national event and defeated Sim Viseth at the lightweight (60kg). The next gold medal of the National Championships was taken by Ministry of Economy and Finance’s Saet Sarith who triumphed over Ly Toeun at the light welterweight (63.5kg).
Vy Sophors achieved medals in several previous editions and after a short break, he returned to the top of the podium after beating Ieng Chanleak at the welterweight (67kg). Moeun Sokhuch moved up to the new light middleweight (71kg) and defeated Chhoeung Lvey in the final. Chhoun Manh was titleholder at the middleweight (75kg) and continued his winning path against Keo Samrith in the new edition of the Nationals.
