Rohit Mor, Akash, Sumit and Lakshya Chahar won their first titles at the Indian Elite National Championships

The Indian Men’s Elite National Championships was held in the city of Bellary and their new generation shined in the competition. Among India’s experienced boxers, Deepak Kumar, Shiva Thapa and Sanjeet won their weight classes but Rohit Mor, Akash, Sumit and Lakshya Chahar claimed their first elite titles.

The new 13 men’s elite weight classes have been introduced during the Indian Men’s Elite National Championships. Their elite male boxers could attend at the 48kg, 51kg, 54kg, 57kg, 60kg, 63.5kg, 67kg, 71kg, 75kg, 80kg, 86kg, 92kg and +92kg weight categories.

The national event was a selection tournament for the AIBA Men’s Elite World Boxing Championships which will be held in Belgrade, Serbia from October 24. The coaches of the Indian national team used the event as first selection for Belgrade where the country has got strong potentials to win medals.

The first gold medal of the event was achieved by Gobind Kumar Sahani who claimed bronze medal in the 2018 National Championships and competed in a few international events already. The young light flyweight (48kg) boxer eliminated super talented Selay Soy in the preliminary stage and Youth National Champion Barun Singh Shagolshem in the semi-finals and continued his winning path against Kuldeep Kumar.

SSCB’s Deepak Kumar was silver medallist at the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships in Bangkok and moved up to the new flyweight (51kg). Deepak is a well-experienced boxer from many events and dominated all of his contests in the national competition including the bouts against Sparsh Kumar, Ajay Pendor and Ankit.

Following Akash’s success at the bantamweight (54kg), a 20-year-old talent, Rohit Mor caused a tough surprise in the final of the featherweight (57kg) where he defeated Commonwealth Games bronze medallist experienced Mohammed Hussamuddin. Varinder Singh represented India at the lightweight (60kg) in the Dubai 2021 ASBC Asian Boxing Championships where he claimed bronze medal therefore he had enough skills to beat a former WSB boxer, Muhammed Etash Khan in the final.

Five-time ASBC Asian Boxing Championships medallist and two-time Olympian Shiva Thapa opened his campaign in the National Championships with a KO success. The 28-year-old light welterweight (63.5kg) boxer had a tough quarter-final against teenage hope Ankit Narwal but he managed to win that crucial battle. Thapa marched to the final and claimed his next national title after beating SSCB’s Dalveer Singh Tomar.

Akash competed at the Budapest 2018 AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships and moved up to the welterweight (67kg) and earned his first national title after beating Aditya Pratap Yadav. Nishant Dev is a new face in the top national ranking but he defeated the best boxers of the light middleweight (71kg) including Naveen Boora and Amit Kumar.

Sumit is a 19-year-old talent who attended at the Kielce 2021 AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships and quickly involved to the elite events and won the title of the middleweight (75kg) following his success over veteran Rohit Tokas. Sachin Kumar attended already international events and he had enough knowledge to beat the young Vinit in the final of the light heavyweight (80kg).

Lakshya Chahar won the title at the 2019 Indian Youth National Championships and became elite winner in Bellary following his success over stars as Sumit Sangwan and Prayag Chauhan. Sanjeet was quarter-finalist at the Yekaterinburg 2019 AIBA World Boxing Championships and he claimed a surprise gold medal at the Dubai 2021 ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships. Sanjeet dominated the heavyweight (92kg) in the national event and outpointed Haryana’s Naveen Kumar in the final.

SSCB’s Narender Berwal has been attending in the international events since 2012 but he was all the time No.2 in India behind Tokyo Olympian Satish Kumar. The currently 27-year-old boxer’s time has come and won the title of the super heavyweight (+91kg) following his success over Sagar.
