Review of the ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships – Nigina Uktamova and Yelnur Suyunbay were the best youth boxers in Dubai

The youth finals at the ASBC Asian Youth & Junior Boxing Championships were held in the tenth and last competition day of the event. Kazakhstan’s Yelnur Suyunbay and Uzbekistan’s AIBA Women’s Youth World Champion Nigina Uktamova were named as the best boxers of the ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships.

Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, India, Kyrgyzstan, Iraq, Iran and United Arab Emirates had youth finalists in the youth age group of the championship in Dubai. Kazakhstan won eleven gold medals in the youth part of the competition and topped the team and medal standings in Dubai. Uzbekistan earned eight gold medals while India achieved six in the last competition day of the event.

Altogether 141 youth athletes competed in the ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships where the 2003-2004 age groups could attend for the medals and money prizes. Fifteen nations sent their boxers to the ASBC Asian Youth & Junior Boxing Championships in Dubai: Bahrain, India, Iran, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Kuwait, Mongolia, Nepal, Palestine, Sri Lanka, Syria, Tajikistan, United Arab Emirates and Uzbekistan. All of them competed in the youth age group of the competition which saw ten days of boxing.

The first youth gold medal of the whole event was achieved by Kazakhstan’s defending AIBA Youth World Champion Sanzhar Tashkenbay He had to meet for the title with India’s Suresh Vishvanath who claimed gold medal at the Fujairah 2019 ASBC Asian Junior Boxing Championships at the age of 15. The Kazakh light flyweight (48kg) boxer controlled their exchanges and he was better in all aspects of boxing in their impressive final.

The head coach of the Kazakh youth national team, Mr. Kairat Satzhanov selected a powerful squad for Dubai and their male talents earned eight gold medals. Their fabulous 18-year-old Yelnur Suyunbay achieved silver medal at the Kielce 2021 AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships which he changed to gold at the light welterweight (63.5kg). He worked from longer distance against India’s Vanshaj in the final and not only won their contest but he was named as the Best Male Boxer of the ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships.

The Uzbek women’s team developed amazingly in the recent years and reached the top level of the Asian continent. Former two-time Asian Games winner coach Mr. Elshod Rasulov upgraded the skills of their female boxers who delivered five gold medals in Dubai. Uzbekistan’s reigning AIBA Women’s Youth World Champion and ASBC Asian Junior Champion Nigina Uktamova defeated India’s Preeti in the final of the featherweight (57kg) and she was named as the Best Female Boxer of the event.

The Indians earned six gold medals in the youth part of the championship including four among the girls. Their Bishwamitra Chongtham is a fantastic talent in our sport who claimed his second Asian title in Dubai after his junior success in Fujairah from 2019. Kyrgyzstan’s Omar Livaza was near to win the men’s lightweight (60kg) but his silver medal is also a strong career highlight for him. Iran and Iraq also proved developments in terms of strength and technical skills therefore these nations had also finalists in Dubai.
