Tajikistan’s former Asian Games winner veteran Jakhon Kurbonov returned with a triumph at the National Spartakyad

The Spartakyad, Tajikistan Boxing Federation’s first big event this year is holding in Dushanbe and big names are competing in the four-days long tournament. ASBC Asian Women’s Boxing Championships bronze medallist Shoira Zulkaynarova opened her campaign with a clear success while Tajikistan’s former Asian Games winner veteran Jakhon Kurbonov returned with a triumph.

Boxers who were born in 1981 and in 2002 are eligible to attend in the Tajikistan National Spartakyad in Dushanbe. The national event is their next selection before the AIBA World Boxing Championships which is scheduled to be held in Belgrade, Serbia between 26 October and 6 November. Their National R&J Seminar holds also during the Spartakyad where the number of the participating referees is 13.

Tajikistan claimed four bronze medals in the last edition of the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships in Dubai, United Arab Emirates where two of their girls and boys succeeded. Tajikistan qualified two boxers for the Tokyo Olympic Games, Bangkok 2019 ASBC Asian Champion Bakhodur Usmonov (63kg) and FISU University World Champion Shabbos Negmatulloev (81kg).

Khatlon region’s experienced female boxer, Khusniya Kholova started her campaign well and she eliminated Nigina Khafizova in the opening day of the Spartakyad and remained her chance alive to win the light flyweight (48kg). Madina Gaforova represented Tajikistan at the Jakarta 2018 Asian Games and after a short break she returned to the events. The 22-year-old featherweight (57kg) boxer was not enough shape on her return and suffered a loss to Manzura Nozimova of Khatlon.

ASBC Asian Women’s Boxing Championships bronze medallist Shoira Zulkaynarova of Dushanbe used her experiences and height advantage well against Nozanin Bobokhonova of Bokhtar in their lightweight (60kg) contest. Dushanbe’s next experienced female boxer, AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships quarter-finalist Nilufar Boboyorova eliminated Mekhrona Mukhtorova and advanced to the next stage of the welterweight (69kg).

Bakhtovar Sagizov represented Tajikistan in the recent editions of the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships at the men’s bantamweight (56kg) but he can expect hard job in the National Spartakyad in Dushanbe. He defeated Khudoyberdi Mamadyorbekov of Badakhshan in the opening day of the event but his main rivals such as two-time Youth National Champion Voris Makhmudov, 19-year-old talented Khusravkhon Rakhimov and returning Fayzmamad Malakhbekov also won their contests in the event.

Abdumalik Boltayev is a 20-year-old talent at the middleweight (75kg) who received the right to attend at the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships in Dubai last month. The young talent eliminated Zamirbek Kayumov of Sughd region by RSC while his main national rival, veteran Bakhtiyor Mirzomukhammed also advanced to the last four. Dushanbe’s favourite at the welterweight (69kg), Saidikrom Amonov was too strong for Mukhammadikbol Jumazoda in his opening bout.

Jakhon Kurbonov is a 35-year-old veteran who decided to continue his career and the Sughd region’s boxer competes at the super heavyweight (+91kg) in the Spartakyad. The former Asian Games winner and two-time Olympian boxer defeated Subkhon Boboyev in the quarter-finals. Dushanbe’s Mukhammad Abroridinov walked over to the next stage in the event and could be Kurbonov’s main rival in the Spartakyad.
