ASBC President Anas Alotaiba congratulates to Bahrain’s first ever Olympic quota place in boxing

The President of the Asian Boxing Confederation Mr. Anas Alotaiba and the whole ASBC management congratulates to the President of the Bahrain National Olympic Committee, to the President of the Bahrain Boxing Federation Mr. Yousif Al Kooheji, to the staff of Bahrain and to Denys Latypov who received the quota place from the IOC Boxing Task Force.

Latypov had enough points in the BTF World Ranking to achieve the Olympic spot as the best Asian super heavyweight (+91kg) boxer. Latypov’s quota place is Bahrain’s first ever Olympic spot in boxing which is their next historical step.

Bahrain Boxing’s new era began in the end of 2017 when the country started to develop the sport in all strategic levels. Bahrain sent two boxers including one female hope to the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships to Bangkok in April 2019 which was the country’s first appearance in the continental events. One of their young talents attended at the ASBC Asian Schoolboys Boxing Championships in Kuwait City a few months later, and Bahrain had also a quarter-finalist at the Fujairah 2019 ASBC Asian Junior Boxing Championships. 

Their No.1, Denys Latypov was born in the Tatarstan region of the Russian Federation but he represents Bahrain in the international events since 2019. Denys Latypov is currently Bahrain’s best elite boxer who attends at the super heavyweight (+91kg) since he changed his nationality. The former Russian WSB boxer is well-known in all of the international competitions and he had more than 300 contests during his long career since 2006.

One of the region’s top events, the Clash of the Countries Sovereign Boxing Tournament was held in the city of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates in November 2019 where Bahrain impressed with five gold medals and their No.1 Denys Latypov also won his final. The super heavyweight (+91kg) boxer followed his coach’s instructions and defeated Ireland’s experienced Stephen McMonagle in one of the best fights of the tournament. 

He claimed silver medal at the 2020 Strandja Memorial Tournament in Bulgaria before the Olympic Qualifying Event. Latypov had a surprise success over France’s Minsk 2019 European Games silver medallist Mourad Aliev in the semi-finals. Latypov became the first finalist in a top international tournament from Bahrain and despite of his loss to Ukraine’s Tsotne Rogava, he proved his potential in Sofia.

The experienced boxer has got more than 10 years of experiences in top competitions and his skills are one of the bests in the super heavyweight (+91kg) which he demonstrated in the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Amman. Latypov was too quick and strong for South Korea’s Song Hwa Pyeong in his opening contest therefore the referee from Trinidad & Tobago stopped the bout. Latypov had to face in the quarter-finals with Uzbekistan’s defending AIBA World Champion Bakhodir Jalolov. He was competitive against Jalolov and his quarter-final loss guaranteed enough ranking points for him to achieve the quota place for the Tokyo Olympic Games.

President of the Asian Boxing Confederation Mr. Anas Alotaiba met with the President of the Bahrain Boxing Federation Mr. Yousif Al Kooheji to discuss several important matters in the wonderful city of Dubai this month about later actions and future cooperation. The main discussion took place about the upcoming ASBC Asian Schoolgirls and Schoolboys Boxing Championships. The competition will be held in Bahrain and could be the first ever historical edition for the schoolgirls.
