Tokyo Olympians Bibossynov and Kunkabayev among the winners of the Cologne Boxing World Cup on Day1
The new edition of the Cologne Boxing World Cup began with the quarter-finals in the city of Köln today. Eight experienced Kazakh boxers are attending in the Cologne Boxing World Cup and among them five won their contests in the first competition day. Tokyo Olympians as Saken Bibossynov and Kamshybek Kunkabayev dominated their contests over European opponents on Day1.
Germany’s top international event has been re-scheduled twice last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic and postponed to December 2020. The new edition is scheduled to be hosted in Cologne in March 10-14 and will be supporting the preparations of the boxers. The name of the event was known as Chemistry Cup in the previous decades and has got the tradition and bright boxing history with many stars on the board.
Kazakhstan’s Saken Bibossynov claimed bronze medal at the Yekaterinburg 2019 AIBA World Boxing Championships and qualified for the Tokyo Olympic Games through the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event. The Kazakh flyweight (52kg) boxer met with Germany’s Christopher Goman and used his longer hands successfully. The Kazakh southpaw was quicker and stronger than his younger German opponent therefore he is a guaranteed medallist in the Cologne Boxing World Cup.
Aslanbek Shymbergenov claimed silver medal at the Jakarta 2018 Asian Games but his fellow Ablaikhan Zhussupov replaced him in the top team. The tall welterweight (69kg) boxer moved ahead more than in his last international competition and landed tough jabs against Germany’s Cologne Boxing World Cup winner Deniel Krotter. Shymbergenov had longer hands in the contest but tactically this time he was not the best and the younger German was able to beat Shymbergenov today.
Kazakhstan’s heavyweight (91kg) star, Youth Olympic Games winner and AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships Aibek Oralbay is only 20 but is the defending Elite National Champion. The promising Kazakh controlled the first round against Belgium’s Victor Schelstraete and he increased his tempo in the second. The referee counted the experienced Belgian in the second round and the Kazakh continued that strong performance therefore Oralbay won the contest by large margin of differences.
Kazakhstan’s Yertugan Zeinulinov won the lightweight (63kg) in their last 2020 National Championships and received the right after a few years to attend in a strong international tournament. The 24-year-old Kazakh tried to control his quarter-final against Germany’s Assan Hansen but his opponent was successful in the first round from longer range. The Kazakh boxer turned up the heat in the second and his impressive attacks delivered for him a narrow success in Cologne.
Orazbek Assylkulov was silver medallist in the recent two Kazakhstan National Championships and the featherweight (57kg) boxer involved to the team which attends at the Cologne Boxing World Cup. The 22-year-old talent was better in all aspects of boxing than Germany’s Ani Haxhillari and secured a guaranteed medal in the event. Kazakhstan’s next boxer ASBC Asian Youth Champion Yermakhan Zhakpekov was not able to find the distance against Germany’s Andrej Mersljakov and lost his middleweight (75kg) bout. Two-time AIBA World Boxing Championships silver medallist experienced Kamshybek Kunkabayev defeated France’s Djamili Dini Aboudou Moindze at the super heavyweight (+91kg).
