Teenage talent Penh Vanthung claimed gold medal at the Cambodian National Championships

The finals of the Cambodian National Championships were held for the elite women and men boxers in their capital city in Phnom Penh. Eight champions have been crowned including Nov Sreypov among the women boxers and Sao Raingsey at the men’s event. Cambodia’s teenage hope Penh Vanthung also claimed gold medal at the National Championships.

The Cambodians returned to the events with the National Championships and has been preparing hard to get good results at the 2021 Southeast Asian Games which will be held in Hanoi, Vietnam on the end of November. Boxers who were born between 1981 and 2002 were eligible to attend in the new edition of the Cambodian National Championships.

The last edition of the Cambodian National Boxing Championships was held for the elite women and male boxers in the capital city of the country in Phnom Penh on November 2019 and the re-scheduled new edition finished in the recent days.

The Cambodian national team returned to their training camp to Phnom Penh on June 2020 and began the preparations for the planned national and international events. Sixteen female and male boxers have been preparing in the national training camp with the support of four coaches and all of them attended in the National Championships.

The Cambodian boxers have got long term strategic goals the 2023 Southeast Asian Games which will be held in the country at the very first time. The management of the Cambodian Boxing Federation developed a long term strategy in 2016 to develop boxing and make it more popular in the country before 2023. The last international participation of the Cambodian boxers was the 2019 Southeast Asian Games which was held in the Philippines.

Five women boxers competed for the medals at the bantamweight (54kg) in the Cambodian National Championships and among them Ministry of National Defense’s Nov Sreypov was the best in Phnom Penh. She was the most experienced girl among the participants and defeated Soeun Sokly and Vy Sreyros in the final stages of the event.

Om Khem of Kandal was too smart for Prak Kek of Prey Veng in the final of the light flyweight (49kg) and claimed the first gold medal of the men’s event. The defending champion Sao Raingsey eliminated his main national rival, ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships quarter-finalist Bang Non in the semi-finals and continued his winning path against Dos Rathana in the final of the flyweight (52kg).

The bantamweight (56kg) gold medal was earned by Ministry of Interior’s Ouch Thearith who defeated Choun Ean of Ratanakiri in the final. Ministry of Economy and Finance’s Penh Vanthung is one of the top talents of the country and the 18-year-old lightweight (60kg) boxer won the next final against Touch David.

Mang Promanh had three contests in the National Championships at the light welterweight (64kg) but he managed to win all of them in Phnom Penh. Former SEA Games competitor, Phal Sopheak returned to the events and he was too experienced for National Champion Vy Sophors at the welterweight (69kg). The middleweight (75kg) title was captured by Chhoun Manh who defeated Don Doeun in the final while SEA Games competitor, Yon Darath achieved only bronze medal in the national event.
