The Iraqi National Championships are underway with the participation of 188 boxers

The Iraqi National Championships for their elite male boxers are underway in the capital city in Baghdad which is the first important selection competition in the country this year and ten champions will be crowned after the finals.

Altogether 188 boxers are attending in the Iraqi National Championships and all of them are well-prepared to the first goal of the new year. The Iraqi boxers trained mostly at home in the quarantine period of the Covid-19 pandemic, and returning to the gyms and to the national events were exciting moments for them.

The boxers represent all regions of Iraq and finally 50 boxing clubs sent their best boxers to the Iraqi National Championships. The boxers from the national team and the next generation of their athletes are all attending in the National Championships. The competition began with the general weigh-in, official draw, the opening ceremony and with the first sessions.

The Iraqi Boxing Federation have got new strategic plans to build up their next stage of future following plenty of medals in the recent ten years. Iraq has got bright and impressive history in boxing, the sport was born in the area of the country and the Iraqi Boxing Federation is proud of their long traditions.

Iraq represented the previous two editions of the Olympic Games in London and in Rio de Janeiro with one boxer on each event. Iraq sent a team to the 2020 Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event to Amman, Jordan but their boxers were unable to get any quota for the Tokyo Olympic Games yet.

The Iraqi boxers have been preparing with full speed to the upcoming World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event which took place in Paris, France this June which is their last chance to earn spots for the Tokyo Olympics. The new Iraqi National Championships will be decided the places in the national team.
