Chaiya Ruamtham surprisingly bowed out AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Peerapat Yeasungnoen in the last 16 at the Thailand Elite National Championships

Thirty-six contests were held in the fourth competition day at the Thailand National Elite Boxing Championships in the Muak Lek District where the girls advanced to the semi-finals while the male boxers to the quarter-finals. Chaiya Ruamtham surprisingly eliminated Peerapat Yeasungnoen at the men’s welterweight (69kg) on Day4 when Sawanya Srisawat caused the main surprise among the women boxers.

Thailand returned to the trainings and to their national sport center short after the quarantine period and their top boxers are in top shape in the national event. Altogether 213 female and male bouts have been scheduled in the 2020 edition of the Thailand Elite National Boxing Championships in Muak Lek.

There are more than 16 boxers in almost all of the weight categories in the national event where some of the divisions are crowded with more than 25 participating athletes. Boxers who were born between 1980 and 2001 are eligible to attend in the Thailand Elite National Boxing Championships.

The women boxers can compete in five weight categories in the national event: at the light flyweight (48kg), at the flyweight (51kg), at the featherweight (57kg), at the lightweight (60kg) and at the welterweight (69kg). The male boxers are competing for the medals in six different weight classes in Muak Lek: light flyweight (49kg), flyweight (52kg), featherweight (57kg), lightweight (63kg), welterweight (69kg) and middleweight (75kg).

Jutamas Jitpong was near to get the Olympic quota at the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event but missed her last final step in Amman. The 22-year-old female flyweight (51kg) boxer was too strong for Apinya Butdaung in their quarter-final bout in Muak Lek. Following Jitpong’s knock down, Butdaung’s ringside abandoned their unequal contest still in the first round.

Sawanya Srisawat delivered one of the top sensations of the fourth competition day when she eliminated AIBA Women’s Junior World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Chiranchaya Phunsang in the quarter-finals of the flyweight (51kg). Two-time AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Chuthamat Raksat determined she is strong enough and knocked out Worrada Phuthakosa on Day4.  

AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships silver medallist Sudaporn Seesondee won her second contest in Muak Lek by RSC, she eliminated Pranida Kaewkankoon in the quarter-finals of the lightweight (60kg). Two-time ASBC Asian Women’s Youth Champion Porntip Buapa spent less than one round in the ring against Suthatip Thongtripan when the referee confirmed her triumph.

Thanchanok Saksri represented Thailand in a few international events therefore her success over Thanawadee Sommanat was an expected result on Day4. The top favourite of the women’s welterweight (69kg), 19-year-old Baison Manikon met with a dangerous rival, Janjaem Suwannapheng but the Tokyo Olympian stopped her in the second round.  

Cologne Boxing World Cup winner Wuttichai Yurachai proved better performance in his second appearance in Muak Lek and stopped Supakit Kampa in the middle of their flyweight (52kg) bout. Tokyo Olympian and AIBA Youth World Champion Thitisan Panmod controlled his second contest against Apichart Chaikaew and will be boxing with his main rival, Wuttichai Yurachai already in the quarter-finals.

Youth Olympic Games winner and AIBA Youth World Champion Atichai Phoemsap moved up to the welterweight (69kg) but used his strength to beat Charoensin Iamsiri in a quick contest. Phoemsap will be boxing in the quarter-finals with ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships silver medallist Chaiya Ruamtham who surprisingly eliminated AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Peerapat Yeasungnoen.
