ASBC Heroes – Kazakhstan’s Abzal Serik won five events in 2019
Kazakhstan’s Abzal Serik won the title of the boys’ lightweight (60kg) at the Fujairah 2019 ASBC Asian Junior Boxing Championships controlling his contests in the United Arab Emirates. Kazakhstan’s Abzal Serik turned to 17 this year and following his impressive results in 2019, he is one of our ASBC Heroes.
Abzal Serik was born in the city of Shymkent on the 31st of March in 2003 and began boxing at the age of 10. The 2018 Kazakhstan Junior National Championships was held in the city of Ekibastuz which is located the Northeastern part of the country in the Pavlodar region. Abzal Serik was newcomer in the event and joined to the junior age group that January but his skills were enough to beat Ernur Akylbek in the final of the bantamweight (54kg) and achieved his first Kazakh national title.
Abzal Serik impressed in his first international event, at the Emil Zhechev Junior Memorial Tournament in Bulgaria on April 2018 which he won with impressive performance. He repeated that strong result at the annual Heydar Aliyev International Junior Cup in Azerbaijan and achieved the title of the featherweight (57kg).
The 2019 edition of the Kazakhstan Junior National Boxing Championships was held in the city of Oskemen which is well-known about its former name, Ust-Kamenogorsk. Abzal Serik is one of their top stars in this age group who claimed his first junior title in Ekibastuz in 2018 and defended his throne in Oskemen. The 15-year-old promising star moved up to the lightweight (60kg) in the recent months and dominated all of his fights in Oskemen.
Abzal Serik won the titles in three international events before the start of the ASBC Asian Junior Boxing Championships. He claimed gold medals in the Emil Zhechev Junior Memorial Tournament, at the Makanalin & Nokerbekov & Satenov Junior Memorial Tournament and at the Nations Junior Cup in Serbia. Serik defeated Tajikistan’s Saddomi Hojizoda, Kyrgyzstan’s Aziz Sabirov and India’s Vanshaj during his road to the finals of the ASBC Asian Junior Boxing Championships.
Uzbekistan’s Bekzod Bekmurodov eliminated Thailand’s Phanuwat Butchan in the semi-finals of the lightweight (60kg) but he had to meet with Kazakhstan’s Abzal Serik for the title in Fujairah. Serik was one of the most experienced juniors in their national team who impressed in the whole tournament. Both boxers had amazing defence in their final contest which was one of the most tactical ones in the seventh competition day. The 16-year-old Kazakh was slightly experienced than his Uzbek opponent and won his title in this competition, remaining unbeaten in 2019.
The 2020 edition of the Kazakhstan Youth National Championships was held in the city of Atyrau which is located off the coast of the Caspian Sea. Dzhambul region’s Elnur Suyunbay caused a big surprise when he defeated ASBC Asian Junior Champion Abzal Serik in the quarter-finals of the lightweight (60kg). Serik has done his debut among the youth boxers in this national event which was held on January 2020.
