Iraqi Boxing Federation launched new strategic plans and proud of their bright boxing history which started 5,000 years ago
The Iraqi Boxing Federation have got new strategic plans to build up their next stage of future following plenty of medals in the recent ten years. Iraq has got bright and impressive history in boxing, the sport was born in the area of the country and the Iraqi Boxing Federation is proud of their long traditions.
Boxing is at least so old as far as the earliest civilizations in our globe according to the archaeological evidences and written sources. Due to the simplicity of the sport and the military purposes boxing spread around the first civilizations quickly.
The sport was born in the Sumerian cities at the beginning of the 3rd millennium BC, but Egypt, India, Greece and China also have evidences for the sport in their ancient civilizations. The ancient Sumerian cities such as Ur, Uruk, Eridu, Larsa, Lagash, Nippur located in the current area of Iraq.
One of the earliest carvings which is a physical evidence for boxing depicted in the civilisation of Samaria almost 5,000 years ago about two fighters. The votive tablets found by archaeologists at the Sumerian city of Khafaje which was dated around 3000 BCE and contains information about boxers.
In the modern era, Iraq joined to the boxing events in the Rome 1960 Olympic Games where the country attended with two boxers. Ismail Khalil Salman was three-time Asian Champion in the 1980s and became Iraq’s most successful boxer in their history.
Iraq represented the previous two editions of the Olympic Games in London and in Rio de Janeiro with one boxer on each event. Their current teams attended all of the recent ASBC Asian Boxing Championships and proved their best especially at the Kuwait City 2019 ASBC Asian Schoolboys Boxing Championships.
Following their training camps in various nations, Iraq attended at the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Amman but their boxers were not able to get a quota place yet for the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games. Iraq will have the second chance to qualify boxers at the World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event next year.
