Vietnam’s veteran duo returned with amazing victories at the Southeast Asian Games on Day2
The second competition day of the 30th edition of the Southeast Asian Games also saw 13 fights as in the opening sessions of the multisport event. Altogether 25 female and 51 male boxers are attending in the Southeast Asian Games in the Philippines. Vietnam’s veteran duo Nguyen Van Hai and Truong Dinh Hoang returned to the world of boxing after a short break and both boxers won their tough fights on Day2.
The boxing tournament of the new edition of the Southeast Asian Games will be starting on December 4 while the finals are scheduled to take place on December 9. The Southeast Asian Games is a multisport event, holds every two years and in the region and several top boxers will be in action including medallists from the recent World and Asian Championships.
Philippines’ Rogen Ladon and Charly Suarez won their opening fights on home soil Philippines’ AIBA World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Rogen Ladon opened his campaign at the men’s flyweight (52kg) against the defending SEA Games winner, Indonesia’s Aldoms Suguro. The titleholder Indonesian succeeded on Day1 when he defeated Myanmar’s Moe Zaw Myint but Ladon was too smart for him in the second day of boxing. Following Ladon’s impressive success, Incheon 2014 Asian Games silver medallist and Rio 2016 Olympian Charly Suarez stopped Myanmar’s Arkar Paing Min and also advanced to the semi-finals of the event.
Timor Leste’s Jose Barreto Quintas Da Silva won a key fight in the SEA Games Timor Leste did not compete in any international events in Asia this year due their financial difficulties but their boxers prepared well to the Southeast Asian Games. Jose Barreto Quintas Da Silva attended in the Jakarta 2018 Asian Games and he proved rapid developments since that competition. The young flyweight (52kg) boxer had to meet with Cambodia’s ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships quarter-finalist Bang Non and fought over his previous level on Day2. Quintas Da Silva had a superb finish in the third round and eliminated his Cambodian opponent winning the bout by split decision.
Thailand’s trio dominated their fights in the second competition day Thailand’s Ammarit Yaodam moved back to the flyweight (52kg) in the recent months and received the right to box in the Southeast Asian Games. The 27-year-old boxer dominated the first round against Laos’ Sakhone Lasavongsy and the referee stopped their unequal contest in the second. Thailand’s new 19-year-old sensation from Phuket, Khunatip Pidnuch also won his opening fight by RSC against Cambodia’s Sam Viseth at the lightweight (60kg). Thailand’s third success was guaranteed by Youth Olympic Games winner Atichai Phoemsap who enjoyed his quarter-final against Indonesia’s Libertus Gha.
Vietnam’s male veterans returned with impressive successes and Truong eliminated the defending champion at the light heavyweight (81kg) Vietnam arrived with a strong team to the boxing tournament of the Southeast Asian Games and two of their former stars returned to the competitions. Nguyen Van Hai is member of the national team since 2009 and his 10 years of experiences in the international stage paid off against Singapore’s Tay Jia Wei at the light welterweight (64kg). Their next veteran in action was Truong Dinh Hoang who claimed gold at the 2015 edition but he had to meet with Philippines’ ASBC Asian Boxing Championships silver medallist John Nobel Marvin who was the titleholder at the light heavyweight (81kg). Truong used his strength and stamina to make a huge surprise in the second competition day, eliminating the defending champion.
