Mr. Wayne Rose – All of our decisions were clear and we did not have any issues in Ulaanbaatar

Mr. Wayne Rose is Australia’s most experienced boxing official who worked several worldwide and Asian events in the recent years. He worked as Technical Delegate in the Ulan-Ude 2019 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships before our youth continental event in Ulaanbaatar.

He was one of the R&J Evaluators in the ASBC Asian Confederation Youth Boxing Championships in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Mr. Wayne Rose shared with us his thoughts about the world of boxing, the event in Ulaanbaatar, the work of the Referees & Judges and Australia’s hopes in

“The atmosphere of the ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships was great in Mongolia and we enjoyed this event in spite of the low temperatures. We realized good branding and friendly local organizers in Ulaanbaatar. The boxers and the coaches respected the whole event in Ulaanbaatar where we had extremely cold weather in the recent days.

The men’s part of the event was healthy and competitive but there were big differences between the experiences of the boxers. Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan appeared bigger, their performance and team are looking good for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The women’s part of the ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships was very good especially in the smaller weight classes.

The strengths of the competition were the strong ASBC presence, the sponsorship, the dedicated and professional photographer, the accommodation of the teams and officials, the well-organized transportation, the medal ceremonies, the venue and the experienced ITO team.

The other side of the coin is that we had two rings without professional computer support and the temperature inside the stadium was too cold for the boxers and officials. We had less than two rotations in the Referees & Judges which was not so easy for us. The first and second competition days were too short.

We had a good Referee & Judge Team in Ulaanbaatar, inexperienced but eager to learn and grow. We did not have any issues with the decisions and these Referees & Judges will be better in the future with these experiences. I am a bit disappointed in some of the 3-stars R&Js as they appeared disinterested in the event.

My next event is the Southeast Asian Games which will be held in the Philippines on December. I am expecting strong upcoming competitions but the ongoing uncertainty around AIBA makes our life more difficult. Boxers want to fight but without clear pathways we will get a breakdown in the confidence of admin.

For the Australian female and male boxers, the Qualification for Tokyo could be difficult through the pathway. Thankfully with the number of available quota places if they make semi-finals they may gain a spot for Tokyo. I am confident in our men’s 63kg, men’s +91kg and women’s 60kg but all of the others could be a bonus for us,” said Australia’s official Mr. Wayne Rose after the ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships.
