Former medallists as Butdee and Masuk lead Team Thailand in the AIBA World Boxing Championships

Thailand is another Asian boxing nation which is aiming for a medal in the upcoming AIBA World Boxing Championships which is scheduled to take place in Yekaterinburg, Russian Federation on September 7-22. Thailand’s management selected experienced boxers to the AIBA World Boxing Championships which will be strong preparations for them before the Qualification Events.
Thailand hosted the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships and the Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament this year but their boxers attended as many international events as possible. Thailand was successful at the Gee Bee Tournament in Finland, in the Cologne Boxing World Cup, in the Indian Open International Boxing Tournament, in the Grand Prix Usti nad Labem and in the Boxam Tournament in Spain.
The head coach Thailand boxing team, Mr. Juan Bautista Fontanills is fully focusing to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and its qualifiers therefore the event in Yekaterinburg is one of their final checks where their boxers are currently and which developments need to be done before the Qualification Event. Thailand attended in an international training camp in Kienbaum, Germany twice this Summer to prepare with tough opponents.
Wuttichai Yurachai was involved to their team at the Jakarta 2018 Asian Games but since then he proved significant development. The 25-year-old boxer won the gold medal at the light flyweight (49kg) in the Cologne Boxing World Cup where Yurachai was too smart for Armenia’s European Games winner Artur Hovhannisyan. The Thai boxer will be attending at the flyweight (52kg) in the AIBA World Boxing Championships.
Chatchai Decha Butdee is Thailand’s most experienced boxer who competed already in the 2005 AIBA World Boxing Championships. The 34-year-old veteran claimed bronze in the Almaty 2013 AIBA World Boxing Championships and gold in the 2015 ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships. Butdee is still in top form, he claimed gold at the Indian Open and also in the Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament this year.
Somchay Wongsuwan appeared first in the international stage in 2014 when he competed in the ASBC Asian Confederation Youth Boxing Championships. Following five years of strong developments the 23-year-old lightweight (63kg) boxer arrived to the pool of the best Asians. He had tough fights against the best boxers this year and claimed silver medal in the Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament.
Thailand’s next experienced boxer in Yekaterinburg will be Wuttichai Masuk who attended already at the Guadalajara 2008 AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships. Since then his career is significantly risen with gold medal from the Asian Games, ASBC Asian Boxing Championships and bronze from the Doha 2015 AIBA World Boxing Championships. Following his silver medal in the 2019 Cologne Boxing World Cup, Masuk moved up to the welterweight (69kg) which was an excellent decision.
