8 Asians capture Strandja titles.
Eight Asian boxers bannered by Uzbekistan’s Olympic champions Bakhodir Jalolov and Hasanboy Dusmatov dominated their respective weight divisions in the recently concluded 74th Strandja Memorial Tournament in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Tokyo Olympics king Jalolov, who is also a former world champion and three-time Asian elite titlist, crushed USA’s Joshua Edwards, 5-0, in his opening match before enjoying walkover victories en route to the super heavyweight (+92kg) gold.
Rio Summer Games winner and three-time Asian champ Dusmatov decimated Argentina’s Ramon Quiroga, 5-0, in the flyweight (51kg) final.
Meanwhile, ASBC U22 silver medalist Shodiyorjon Melikuziev eked out a 4-1 win over Govind Kumar of India to snare the minimumweight (48kg) title.
Mujibullo Tursunov defended his light welterweight (63.5kg) throne after stunning Asian champion Ruslan Abdullayev, 4-1, even as Asadkhudja Muydinkhudjayev upset Asian U22 winner Bekhzod Khamidov, 5-0, to top the welterweight (67kg) class.
Shokhjakhon Abdullayev emerged triumphant in cruiserweight (86kg) to cap off Uzbekistan’s seven-gold haul in the men’s category.
China’s Hu Meiyi defeated India’s Anamika, 4-1, to cop the women’s light flyweight (50kg) gold while her teammate Xu Zichun (feather-57kg), India’s Anupama (light heavy-81kg) and Uzbekistan’s Sevda Asenova (minimum-48kg) each settled for silver.
Nearly 400 boxers from across five confederations competed in the Strandja tilt which served as a preparation for the upcoming IBA World Championships.
Kazakhstan and the Philippines were the other Asian countries that sent strong pugs to the latest edition of Europe’s oldest international boxing tournament.
