21 Asians go for gold in Youth World Championships
Twenty-one Asian boxers earned their shot at a gold medal after cruising past the semifinals of the IBA Youth World Boxing Championships 2022 on November 23 at the Ciudad Deportiva Camilo Cano in La Nucia, Spain.
Reigning ASBC youth champions Ravina, Vishvanath Suresh and Vanshaj sparked the charge for defending overall titlist India which produced seven finalists.
Ravina ripped Kazakhstan’s Assem Tanatar, 5-0, in women’s light welterweight (63kg); Suresh toppled Puerto Rico’s Juanma De Jesus Lopez, 4-1, in men’s minimumweight (48kg); and Vanshaj dispatched USA’s Deshawn Crocklem via a 3-2 split decision in men’s light welterweight (63.5kg).
Uzbekistan’s two-time Asian youth champ Aziza Zokirova trounced Ireland’s Laura Moran, 5-0, in women’s light middleweight (70kg) while junior winner Javokhir Ummataliyev tripped England’s Levi Barnes, 4-1, in men’s welterweight (67kg).
Philippines’ Ronel Suyom delivered a massive upset in men’s minimumweight as he knocked down the host nation’s European youth champion Rafael Lozano Serrano in the first round before taking a lopsided 5-0 victory.
Japan’s Yuta Sakai also stunned a European titlist in Georgia’s Gor Ayvazyan through a 4-1 beatdown in men’s bantamweight (54kg).
Kazakhstan’s top bet Daulet Tulemissov thrashed Belgium’s Noa Hadjit, 5-0, in men’s middleweight (75kg) while Elina Bazarova sneaked past Netherland’s Gabriella Maria Weerheim, 3-2, in women’s bantamweight (54kg).
A rest day is set on November 24 before the title bouts take place on November 25 and 26.
