19-year-old Naman Tanwar was the youngest winner in the Indian National Trials

The Indian National Trials delivered world class level of boxing in the city of Patiala where ten champions were crowned. The youngest winner of the Indian National Trials was Naman Tanwar who dominated the heavyweight (91kg) after the narrow battles at the light flyweight (49kg) in Patiala.
The competition was very important for the Indian boxers before the Commonwealth Games and their Trials named as the first selection meeting. The boxing tournament of the Commonwealth Games will be held in Gold Coast, Australia between April 4-15 and India could be one of the powerful countries in the multisport event.
The light flyweight (49kg) was one of the busiest categories in the National Trials where ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships bronze medallist Amit Panghal, Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympian Shyam Kumar Kakara and AIBA Youth World Champion Sachin Siwach Singh competed for the title. Surprisingly Amit Panghal was able to beat all of his strong rivals using his smart tactic in Patiala.
Gaurav Solanki proved top performance as youth boxer in 2014 and in 2015 but he needed a short time to reach the physical level of the elite athletes. The 20-year-old flyweight (52kg) boxer, who claimed silver in the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2015, was enough strong to beat Hamburg 2017 AIBA World Boxing Championships competitor Kavinder Singh Bisht in the final of the National Trials.
Mohammad Hussamuddin achieved silver medal in the 2017 Strandja Memorial Tournament in Bulgaria at the bantamweight (56kg) which was his breakthrough in the elite level. In the absence of their Hamburg 2017 AIBA World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Gaurav Bidhuri, Hussamuddin dominated his final against Madan Lal. Among India’s future hopes, 18-year-old Mohammed Etash Khan claimed bronze medal in the National Trials.
ASBC Asian Champion and two-time Olympian 24-year-old Shiva Thapa is India’s highest ranked boxer who had a few difficulties at the lightweight (60kg) last year. Thapa, who lost a national event a few months ago, regained his title in India but he had to do his very best against ASBC Asian Confederation Youth Boxing Championships silver medallist Ankush Dahiya in the final of the event.
Dheeraj Kumar, who competed for India in the qualification events of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, moved up to the light welterweight (64kg) in the recent one year and defeated Rohit Tokas in the final of the National Trials. Commonwealth Games winner and two-time Olympian Manoj Kumar is India’s veteran boxer who moved up to the welterweight (69kg) but his patient style was enough to beat Duryodhan Singh in the final.
India’s next star boxer, Asian Games winner and two-time Olympian Vikas Krishan Yadav is a key athlete at the middleweight (75kg) who used his strength to beat ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships silver medallist Mandeep Jangra in the final. Krishan, who won the Asian Games in Guangzhou in 2010, is fully confident before the start of the Commonwealth Games.
Manish Panwar was involved to the Indian national team last year but he was unable to qualify for the Hamburg 2017 AIBA World Boxing Championships. He raised his experiences in smaller competitions and Panwar was enough strong to beat Army boxer Devanshu Jaiswal and Brijesh Yadav in the final stages.
AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Naman Tanwar is only 19 but he is already confident in the elite tournaments as well. Tanwar, who won the Galym Zharylgapov Memorial Tournament in Kazakhstan a few weeks ago, shocked London 2012 Olympian Sumit Sangwan in the final of the heavyweight (91kg).
India’s super heavyweight (+91kg) No.1 Satish Kumar was quarter-finalist already in an AIBA World Boxing Championships in 2013 and since then he has been dominating the national events. The 28-year-old experienced athlete had to meet with his main local rival Parveen Kumar in the final of the National Trials and he was able to beat him on their re-match in Patiala.
